William and I used to paint signs for a living. One summer, after his girlfriend at the time moved to Lubbock Texas, he went on a month-long road-trip to go visit her, leaving me to finish up 60 8-foot-long radio ads (including portraits of the morning team) in 30 days. That's 120 hand-painted portraits in 30 days. By myself. However, afterward he handed me a yellow spiral bound notebook filled with poetry about the trip, containing songs like "Chasing the Sun", "Burning Water", "Tumbleweeds", and "Alleys". All of them had to with just the regular sights and sounds of the trip. But they included incredible lines like

Strange paints touch a canvas
That pretends to be the sky
While feathers spread washed colors
On the wings of birds that fly

This is one of the songs from that book. It sat fallow for a long time until I used it in response to a challenge to write a song about a road trip. He loved the fact that it turned out to be a Country song.
