WAKE ME WHEN IT'S OVER ================= Babe, you know I’m leaving I’m going home I can hear my name called in the light I don’t want you grieving There’s no need for tears Everything will turn out right Revel in the time we had to share Celebrate the memories that you keep The answers to your questions Surely lie above Now it’s time for me to sleep Wake me when it’s over Have a party while I’m growin’ colder And maybe cry into your beer Because you think that I’m not there But... I’ve got a first-class ticket into Paradise And if you love me you will see me, just close your eyes And we will spend eternity In love so endlessly And when the living ends you’ll see It’s never over [instrumental] I’ve got a first-class ticket to the afterlife And we’ll forever be together when it comes your time And we will spend eternity Bathed in love so endlessly ‘Cause when your life is done you’ll see It’s never over

Rainbows 02:28
RAINBOWS ========== Rainbows don’t last forever Yet they seem to have no end They’re a blessing and a promise That the rain may come again But the future holds no destinies And kites don’t fly themselves In the blue sky... The blue sky... So high............... There’s a tale of 2 cities And I think the story’s true There are dreams within your reach Far above and beyond the blue And though there’s beauty in a rainbow There's not enough to fill the sky The blue sky... The blue sky... So high............... And while you can’t catch a rainbow You can enjoy the view Choose an ending for your story Your future’s up to you I think you can fly... In the blue sky... So high.............

I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING YOU ============================ I hate myself for loving you The way you walk and all you do Let’s just face it and be through ‘cause I hate myself for loving you Every time that you walk by I pray you'll look my way And in some moment catch my eye But once again you turn away As time went by I saw the signs I’m not Ray Charles but I was blind Then in my heart I found a way But that’s old news... [chorus] Was it love? I couldn’t say it never was in any way But facts are facts, and this much is true I hate myself for loving you Come tomorrow the skies will clear From partly cloudy to severe And as the days grow longer I won't fear The end’s in sight... I bounce and crawl from day to day I want to drop these keys and walk away I try to tell you in all I do But it’s another lie... [chorus x2]
4.
DAY AFTER DAY ============== Deep in my heart where your memory lies There's a handful of dreams of a summer gone by And we're a long, long way away from that warm night in July It's like yesterday is pulling me back to your side [CHORUS] Day after day we build castles in the sand Night after night the tide comes rushing in Flags that flew on high are knocked down by the wind Until we pick them up and build it all again Often things we love become things we revile So despite our love we split for a while My heart was standing still as my soul was standing trial Hoping to recall -- why did we walk down the aisle? [REPEAT CHORUS] Here on the strand, years drifted away Now here we stand with nothing to say You hold out your hand... who needs talk anyway? And we pretend it was all just a long midsummer day [REPEAT CHORUS] ...We'll build it all again.

Dr. Lindyke 02:42
DR. LINDYKE =========== Old Dr. Lindyke blesses his scalpel As he peels up an apple And puts it away. Saving the peeling he looks at the ceiling, He keeps all he can for a cold rainy day. The insipid old doctor gathers his patients, All tired and waiting And too underpaid Urgent indeed and beginning to bleed, He shudders the thought and sends them to pray. Dear Dr. Lindyke approaches the olive Which he finds hard to swallow On his long coffee break. After soaking his hands in another man's wallet He looks to the window for something to say. Oh Dr. Lindyke is this your story Malpractice and glory and gory details? Yes, Dr. Lindyke only you have the courage; So what's there to worry if the aging hand fails? Appointments and ointments grieve Dr. Lindyke As he sits up at midnight And dreams of the dead. All of the graves through the years he has made Walk up the staircase and out of his head. Old Dr. Lindyke carries a strange knife, Laughs at an odd laugh By the light of the moon He seems to be caring but nonetheless daring To operate blindly with the blade of a spoon. He now washes rose from an old table cloth After surgery lost all The prestige he once had He scrubs up a last time to clean up some cheap wine Which isn't as sweet now the doctor's gone mad.

LAKE OF THE FLOWERS ==================== In the old days, living in towers Took a trip out to the Lake of the Flowers Stopping by for a day, had to get away And what was it they'd say? (so wise and hair of grey) Lake of the Flowers It's been so inspiring Where are the hours? (They've all gone away) Lake of the Flowers You know my desires So what's transpired Since my escape? (my escape!) Take a drink here and never grow old Beware the current where the river flows cold But see the water wheel, it meant a great deal Oh, what a way to feel! (the picture is unreal!) Lake of the Flowers It's been so inspiring Where are the hours? (They've all gone away) Lake of the Flowers You know my desires So what's transpired Since my escape? (my escape!)

NO ORDINARY DAY ================ I've thought of you a million times I think you've never left my mind And now here on Saint Valentine's You're there again I picture you as there with me On the sands of a shore of a distant sea Far from this boring destiny We're living in Any other day I second guess and fumble What I want to say And find it hard to start But now's a time Of roses red and holidays And "PLEASE BE MINE" On Conversation Hearts So I pretend it's not some ordinary day Where you won't look my way And I -- Once again find myself tongue-tied And I must believe Though I find it very hard If I send you this card You'll read it And fondly think of me... Then maybe... We can meet each other Maybe we'll go out together Maybe we'll find common ground together... (shrugs) It could happen I picture you as there with me On the sands of a shore of a distant sea Far from this boring destiny We're living in And through the lonely doldrums You're a gentle breeze blowing Smiling like you're knowing Many secrets unrevealed And I don't understand How you got me going And your quiet cool Reaction to it all So I pretend it's not some ordinary day Where you won't look my way And I -- Once again find myself tongue-tied And I must believe Though I find it very hard If I send you this card You'll read it And fondly think of me... Then maybe... We can love each other Maybe we'll move in together Maybe we'll find happiness forever... (shrugs) It could happen

On My Way 03:07
ON MY WAY ========== There's a grassy knoll I've been dreaming to And a fountain not too far away I dream I’m lyin’ there with you Cause I'm leaving today 'm on my way. There's a cool water summer on my mind And a breeze blowing over the bay I’ve always got you on my mind Now I’m rollin’ your way I'm on my way. [Bridge] There's a moon in the river staring at me From the eye in the glare of a wave And I don't even know where that river is going And I don't really care anyway I'm on my way. There's a shady tree I've been thinking of And a sunset to follow that day I’ll always cherish you, my love I'm heading your way I'm on my way. [Instrumental Bridge] [Reprise Chorus] On my way And soon I'll be home to stay Ain't gonna stray Forever on my way.

ON THE WATERFRONT =================== My heart is heavy My lids are closed I've been lost on the roads I chose Way too many times I've talked to myself All evening, no reply Questions come quicker than answers lately And the morning doesn't come at all So you're gonna be leaving You wanna be free To start a new life Where the land meets the sea Where the tide hasn't time To dampen your dreams Where your heart rarely captures Any glimpses of me On the waterfront Sand and sail as far as the eye can see There on the waterfront Where the feeling of freedom is too good to believe Where there's wind and there's waves and plenty of space A routine and a dream to get lost in for days On the waterfront [instrumental break] My heart is heavy My eyes are closed And I've cut myself on this thorny rose One too many times I talked to myself All evening, no reply Questions come quicker than answers lately And the morning doesn't come at all So you tell me you're leaving You wanna be free To start a new life where the land meets the sea Where the tide hasn't time to dampen your dreams Where your heart rarely captures any glimpses of me On the waterfront Sand and sail as far as the eye can see There on the waterfront Where that feeling of freedom is too good to believe Where there's wind and there's waves and plenty of space A routine and a dream to get lost in for days So you'll never be leaving You'll always be free To start a new life where the land meets the sea Where the tide hasn't time to dampen your dreams Where you barely remember what we used to be On the waterfront

Photo Finish 03:32
PHOTO FINISH ============ Two old horses have run the race Both aging but undiminished A little rusty, and lost of some spark But crossing the line in a photo finish I remember the past days like they are tomorrow As fresh as a meadow in spring Put out to pasture - no regrets and no sorrow Looking forward to the promise the future would bring Broken eyed - but not blind Both victims of the ages and sun But classic things never go out of style They just get recycled around and return Mettle or metal, which wins the battle Relics of the past, neither one with the will to survive Except into memories and fantasy And the history of what walks or what rides One dies a pauper- one retires to a museum There’re some who would say they’re the same Each of them sent to his own mausoleum Never again to run on the tracks of the game Broken eyed - but not blind Both victims of the ages and sun But classic things never go out of style They just get recycled around and return

Relief 02:53
RELIEF ====== I’m not a whiner I’m not a shiner And I’ve got religious belief Behind a curtain The future's uncertain Lord I could use some relief Lord, I could use a little relief Lord, I could use a little relief I'm not the man that I used to be Consumed by a fire that no one can see I feel it inside me, it cuts like a blade As my life and my energy fade Lord, I could use a little relief Lord, I could use a little relief We pray for miracles That sometimes don’t arrive In time to save a single soul I can't say I fear at all I know I won't survive But Lord, this takes a heavy toll I hear the stories, I sing the blues I listen to jazz, but I turn off the news Kiss little babies, Stay true to my wife And I've prayed to you, Lord, for all of my life Lord, I could use a little relief Lord, I could use a little relief

Summer Rain 03:49
SUMMER RAIN ============= Walking by the ocean There upon the Strand I heard the pitter patter Of raindrops on the sand I ran to find some shelter 'Neath the safety of a pier And as the storm subsided I turned to find you here. Suddenly came that Summer Rain To melt my heart away Now the ribbons in your hair Will tie the knot this coming May You curtsy, then I follow As we lay down by the sea The ocean gulls are all a-flutter Trying to sing us both to sleep Your eyes were on the ocean But you soon made eyes at me The smile that promised your devotion Made a captive heart of me Suddenly came that Summer Rain To melt my heart away Now the ribbons in your hair Will tie the knot this coming May Perhaps a bit of kismet Blessed are the powers that be In that ever magic moment That captured you and me And when the rain comes down The roses start to bloom Walking on and skipping stones While the clouds bid us adieu Oh, I love that Summer Rain That brought my heart to you There is no shooting star That ever fell so far The way that I just fell for you Yes, I love that Summer Rain That brought my heart to you There is no shooting star That ever fell so far The way that I just fell for you (fade out)

THE RECKONING =============== This room has been so cold for so long And the growing shadows tell me of the time There is a fear and a love here so very strong Telling me that I do and do not belong And with all of the arbitrary Indecision And incisions Over years by Countless barbers I've been made to bleed And though the pain and the Scars have been Quite severe, it's the Judgment and the Reckoning that I need [chorus] So let’s move along now You barristers and dames I recognize your faces But remember not your names Some got the education and some got the brains Some carry the keys while others just pull the chains [instrumental break] Until my presence here has been replaced with my absence There’ll be no high pressure measures and even less to tell And as long as symptoms are passed along as evidence I’ll go on believing rumors that the treatments are going well [repeat chorus twice]
14.
THE WORLD BEYOND ================== Reaching out in wonder to the world beyond With arms too short to satisfy a curiosity so strong Day by day the beckoning a silent beacon calls From inklings of infinity to dreams beyond these walls I wandered beyond the stone today Tomorrow the avenue And someday I may fly away To that place they call the moon Many are the windows under lock so little means But in an infants hands may lie the keys of destiny Marvel at the wonder of the endless world beyond And explore the possibilities of mysteries not yet known I wandered beyond the stone today Tomorrow the avenue And someday I may fly away To that place they call the moon Instinctive the desire Insatiable the quest Though the mind will journey freely It's imprisoned by the flesh I wandered beyond the stone today Tomorrow the avenue And someday I may fly away To that place they call the moon Someday I may just fly away To that place they call the moon
15.
YOU SAVED MY LIFE LAST NIGHT =========================== A couple of thoughts through midnight minds I became hypnotized, as so many do As I stare at the firelight And wake up screaming, and then come to Without all the sirens and the lights I could have slept there all night But then the darkness gave way to grey And the dimness into bright Seems you saved my life last night Though in some heart beats indifference There's a courtship of life and death But somehow this was different The gutter isn't dirty Unless you've never been there Let me tell you, I've been knee-deep in it It's just a question of who, what, and where Past pictures rushed through my mind To remind me of the good lines From Arcadia to Trenholm to Taylor Just reflections of other times Seems you saved my life last night Though in some heart beats indifference There's a courtship of life and death But somehow this was different

Unforgotten 03:46
UNFORGOTTEN ============= Merriment and Mistletoe Some of us got called home And I'm right there with you -- I'll never forget you The chime of tiny silver bells The sights, the sounds, the smells Cinnamon scent and candle glow -- I'll never forget you Unforgotten friends shall live forever In our memories Holidays, every day and always In our memories Angels adorn the trees Covered with lights and seasonal delights Homemade cakes and handmade gifts -- I'll never forget you Family gathered 'round the tree To celebrate the season in Love's glow Where did all the seasons go? -- I'll never forget you Unforgotten friends shall live forever In our memories Holidays, every day and always In our memories [instrumental. Musical quotes from "Jingle Bells", "Carol of the Bells", "We Three Kings"] And it's sometimes hard to take what has happened It must be the gift of caring that preserves the memories Unforgotten friends shall live forever Unforgotten friends -- Unforgotten friends shall live forever In our memories (I remember you) [instrumental outro. Musical quotes from "Carol of the Bells", "We Three Kings"]

about

(Dave writes) My long-time friend and songwriting partner, William Hoover, died in his sleep. This is a (largely autobiographical) tribute.

As for the title of the album, we were heavily influenced by Elton John and Bernie Taupin when we were young, and a few friends had remembered that William wanted me to play "Funeral for a Friend" at his funeral. Of course, that request was 40 years ago, and it changed in the meantime. In this album are a few songs that he specifically asked me to play, and a few more that I chose that may not have been generally heard by others. All of them are autobiographical in some sense. All of them are in William's words. I chose songs the lyrics for which I did practically no editing. For that matter, these are songs for which I did practically no writing... they are as I 'heard' them in my head when I first read the lyrics.

I've included commentary in the track pages that aren't found anywhere else.
